Tournament FAQ
Quick answers to common questions about registration, licenses, fishing days, and tournament rules.
Frequently asked questions
These answers summarize common procedures across our tournaments. Dates, fees, species, limits, jackpot options, and technical requirements can vary by event. Always follow the current event page and official rulebook.
Important: This FAQ is a general guide, not a substitute for the official rules. If a detail differs, the current rulebook and instructions from tournament officials apply.
Registration and preparation
How do I register a boat or team?
Use the registration link on the page for your chosen tournament. Some events may also offer in-person registration. Submit the requested boat and participant information, then follow that event's instructions for fees, payment, and check-in.
Does every angler need a fishing license?
Yes. Each angler must have the valid fishing permit required by Mexican law. Bring it to registration or check-in. The event page can tell you where and when licenses are available locally.
What is included in the entry fee?
Inclusions differ by tournament and may include event meals, an awards dinner, apparel, or other items. Check the registration form or current rulebook for the exact package and any optional add-ons.
Do I need to check in my boat or camera before fishing?
Follow the check-in schedule for your tournament. Events that require catch verification may ask teams to present and synchronize approved video equipment before departure. Confirm the accepted equipment and process in the event's rules.
Tournament day and catch reporting
How many days do we fish, and when is registration?
Fishing takes place on Saturday and Sunday for all tournaments. Team registration is held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the San Carlos Yacht Club (Marina San Carlos, 85506 Guaymas, Sonora). Check your event's instructions for any schedule updates.
Where can I find fishing hours and check-in times?
The official schedule is published in each tournament's rulebook or event updates. It covers start times, lines-in deadlines, roll calls, and weigh-station hours. Tournament control's official time and instructions govern during the event.
How do I report a catch or release?
Use the communication channel and reporting steps specified by the event. Some categories require a control number before recording a release, followed by prompt notification and documentation at the weigh station. Keep reports and video available until officials complete verification.
Are billfish released, and is video required?
Many SCFT billfish categories are catch-and-release and require video verification. The required footage, camera setup, release procedure, and eligible species are event-specific; review the current rulebook before fishing.
Which fish count, and are there size or daily limits?
Eligible species, minimum weights, point values, and daily limits depend on the tournament and category. Do not assume a fish qualifies based on another event's rules. Check the current rulebook and follow Mexican fishing regulations.
Are there restrictions on fishing gear or techniques?
Equipment and angling rules may follow IGFA standards unless the event rules say otherwise. Restrictions can cover lines, hooks, rods, reels, bait, and fishing methods. Review the current rulebook before preparing your tackle.
What happens if weather affects the schedule?
Tournament officials may adjust hours, suspend activity, or change a fishing day when conditions require it. Follow official announcements and instructions from tournament control.
Scoring, jackpots, and awards
How are winners determined?
Each tournament publishes its own scoring categories and tie-break procedures. Points, weights, release verification, and eligible participants may differ. The official rulebook and tournament committee determine final results.
Are jackpots required?
Jackpots are optional when offered. Each event sets its own categories, entry fees, payment method, registration deadline, payout structure, and refund conditions. Enter only using the instructions for that tournament.
Does every tournament have raffles or the same awards?
No. Awards, captain prizes, raffles, and eligibility requirements vary by event. Check the event page and rulebook for what is included and whether participants must be present to claim an award or prize.
How do I raise a protest or rules concern?
Submit concerns in writing to the rules committee before the deadline stated in the rulebook. Include the relevant details and have the team captain follow the event's submission procedure. Committee decisions are handled under that tournament's rules.
